Hi all,
Have you seen the ingredients in Tom`s Of Maine`s Deodarant? [Propylene
Glycol, etc]. When I saw his deoderant in a small town in Taiwan, I was
elated. But when I read the ingredients, I put the Deododerant back, as I
did with his toothpaste which had Fluorine in it. Later I read that Tom`s of
Maine has one line for health and one for the "open market". I don`t know
how true that is, but I recall reading somewhere that Dr. Hulda Clark, Ph.D.
makes a big point out of avoiding any alcohol going into the body( like
Propylene Glycol?): Here is an excerpt found on the Internet search for
propylene glycol:
=============================================
" HIGHLIGHTS: Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are clear liquids used
in antifreeze and deicing solutions. Exposure to large amounts of ethylene
glycol can damage the kidneys, heart, and nervous system. Propylene glycol
is generally regarded as safe for use in food. Ethylene glycol has been
found in at least 34, and propylene glycol in at least 5, of the 1,416
National Priorities List sites identified by the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). "
========================================
My note: " generally regarded as safe for use in food"...What does this
mean? By Whom? When? Why? Where? etc... If it can be lethal in large
dosages,etc... don`t small amounts accumulate in the body? That`s why I put
the Tom`s of Maine deoderant back....& the Fluoinated Toothpaste....Just
being over caurious, some would say...Me? I went back to using 3% Food Grade
H2O2 , Colloidal Silver or even a small amount of Baking soda mixed with
salt ( Gads!)...Ciao for now, Mike Cinelli

I am surprised that dr mercola SAYS THAT------------

Most of his patients cannot tolerate flax? I find this hard to believe.
Not saying he is fibbing or anything.
We get our fresh pressed from a UK company, and it has the best taste of any
flax I have tried, nice and nutty, and not too strong.
Some have tasted unpleasant, but no way is this rancid.
What about Hemp oil, I wonder why this does not seem so popular?

FO/CC and clear cell cancer

2008-10-31 03:27:53

Hi All,
I've recently heard from a lady who has just been dx with Clear Cell, stage
3a Ovarian Cancer. Her Dr told her that even if she gets a remission after
her 6 cycle chemo regime, she will probably live only one to two years. In
a recent visit with her Dr, he told her that 'clear cell' Ovarian cancer has
a poor prognosis.
Well as soon as I 'met' this lady on the phone and by e-mail, I naturally
told her about FO/CC and about zapping. She is now doing both, as well as
having chemo.
Cliff, Mike and others ... Have you heard of 'Anyone' with 'clear cell' who
achieved remission with FO/CC. I don't have the 'clear cell' kind, mine is
the same as Cynthia's (I think), 'Papilliary, Serous, Adenocarcinoma', which
although very nasty, isn't (apparently) as aggressive as 'clear cell'.
I would really appreciate any testimonials regarding this, so I can pass
them along to offer HOPE.
Thanks a million!

Dear Sandy,
I can't thank you enough for your very nice and comprehensive reply. I have got
a few replies but yours is more talking to me than any other.
First and foremost I'm happy for you for your present health and I hope and wish
that you get to my age + a few good years with reasonably good health. You
deserve it. I'm just over 80 y of age.
Secondly: I'm on FAT FREE diet since 1991, eating chicken and/or turkey breast
only and a few times some fish BUT "backed" with no oil at all. What we use
(with my wife) I call it "tap-oil" i.e. water. - As we were borne in Hungary, we
are quite familiar with the cooking secrets. The food, dish has to be attractive
and tasty but it doesn't say that you have to go back to the old system of
cuisine.
I have quite strong will. If I decide not to eat something I haven't much
problem with it.
Sandy, we both wish you many-many healthy years and enjoyable days.
It will be our pleasure to hear from you as soon as you can spare the time for
writing a few lines to us.
Be healthy and happy,
Ervin/Naomi

Indeed, the oil can make one gain weight. Whether or not this is an issue
depends on certain things. Ask yourself if you're following the FO/CC
protocol to rid you of a cancer (that you already have), so in a sense, you
are fighting for your life, right? Or, are you following the protocol to
maintain an already healthy body? Or perhaps you're trying to maintain
health in a body that was 'once' full of cancer (a person in remission for
example, like me) ... in the hope of keeping IT away.
When I first began taking FO/CC, over two years ago, I had been in remission
from Stage 1V Ovarian Cancer for about a year. Believe me, if I'd known
about this 'so simple' protocol when I was diagnosed with cancer, I would
have started it in a heartbeat, but I didn't know about it and one cannot
turn back the clock. It just IS!
I began the FO/CC regime when I was 'already' about 35 pounds overweight and
knew I needed to drop the weight it in order to remain healthy (seeing as I
plan on living to a very old age:-) So around the same time I started
walking every day (Monday to Friday), for about 3 miles. I was using 2
tablespoons of FO at the time with 1/2 cup CC. Right away I started to feel
better, more healthy, BUT, yes I was gaining weight (even while walking).
As I was (mentally) tearing my hair out, I came to the conclusion that
staying alive was more important to me than being fat, but seeing as I have
a bit of a vain side to me (don't we all?) I decided to intentionally,
modify my daily diet i.e. cut down on FAT big time, so that although I was
still taking the FO/CC in the morning for breakfast (over fresh fruit), for
the rest of the day I made a determined effort to eat lots of veggies,
fruits, chicken breast and fish and limited whole wheat bread to 2 slices a
day and drank 8 glasses of water every day as well (hardest part for me,
even though our water is delicious, gravity fed and untreated direct from
from an icy cold mountain stream) ... I know, I need a big kick! Anyway,
the weight came off very slowly.
I look and feel better than I have in many years and I'm walking four miles
every morning (before I have my best meal of the day). Now, I use just one
tablespoon of the FO with 1/2 cup CC. I'm not losing any more weight (still
10 pounds more than I should be) but I can live with that. If the cancer
returned, I'd take 8 tablespoons of FO per day (with CC of course). Living
is definitely more important, right?
So, Ervin, it depends on how determined you are to stick to the FO/CC regime
(I have NEVER missed a day in over two years) and to figure out the rest of
your daily menu so your daily calories and fat grams do not exceed what is
required for your body weight. Yes, it takes a bit of time and research to
figure all of this out, but YOU are worth it! Do it for YOU!
In other words, tailor your daily diet to accommodate your FO/CC protocol.
Once you get started, you wont want to quit.
Good luck!

Re: [FlaxSeedOil2] fresh ground seeds

2008-10-30 06:27:50

Hi Lorhen,
I maintain another list called Flaxhealth which deals a lot with ground seed.
You may want to subscribe to that. This list is for the exchange of ideas among
folks who are engaged in a cancer battle and are using Dr. Budwigs protocol of
flaxoil and cottage cheese.
As to brown versus gold there is no real difference between them. There are many
links that I can provide that help to answer those questions. Ground Seed is NOT
a good substitute for Flax Oil because it takes 3 tablespoons of ground seed to
equal the amount of Omega-3 in one tablespoon of flax oil. Many of the folks on
this list are taking around 5 tablespoons of oil per day. Most peoples digestive
system would not be able to handle 15 tablespoons of ground seed.
There are many considerations when one attempts to capture the benefits of
Omega-3 fats. Reducing and eliminating Omega-6 fats is one such consideration.
Getting the right balance of omega-6 and omega-3 is another. For a healthy
person such as yourself, the best advice I could give you would be to combine
Ground Seed, with Flax Oil and Fish Oil. We are working on protocol utilizing
these three distinct sources and plan on having that available shortly.
You may want to subscribe to the Flaxhealth list for these and other questions,
but also maintain a subscription to this list because there is a lot of
knowledgable people on here who share information. Although there is greater
acceptance to discuss ground seed on this list, some folks still get disturbed
by them. You may also want to consider picking up my wifes book, its a great
book regarding general health and ground flax seed.

I just signed up with this group. I am mainly interested in the preventative
aspect of flax. I have been told that freshly ground golden flax seeds are
superior and would substitute for the oil. What have any of you heard on this?
I use about 3-4 T per day on my cereal with skin milk. I use organic golden
flax seed purchased locally here in Phoenix area. Thanks for any input.

Alone or with

2008-10-29 11:16:20

Hi,
These folks, and any other that I will put on the list, were or are all
following the FO/CC regimen. None used it without the cottage cheese.
In the earlier years that was just automatic. No one ever talked about
using it alone at that time and I never thought of it. If for some reason
one could not use cottage cheese we did talk of things that might be used
with the oil, and there are some, but never alone.
That is one reason that the recommendations of folks like Dr. Mercola in
this area mean nothing at all to me. I like a lot of his stuff and read it
if I get time.

Re: [FlaxSeedOil2]Reply/Lorenzo /Wilhelm/Omega 3 Benefits

2008-10-28 04:09:17

Hi Lorenzo & wilhelm,
Both of your knowledgeable postings are always great and well thought out.
I, for one, learn a lot and have a lot of enjoyment doing so.
Omega3 is one of the main tenets of Dr. Budwig and she mentions both Flaxsed
Oil and Fish as sources. She, however, seems to favor Flaxseed Oil because
it`s a plant oil, and she fears that most fish oils are processed and
thereby have no real use in trying to recover health, among other reasons.
Having said that, both of you have pointed out that fresh wild fish (not
"farmed" fed) are excellent sources of Omega 3. Lorenzo aptly points out
repeatedly that free range fresh meat or wild life meats do provide such
benefits. So we are lucky to have various sources under consideration.
These discussions , IMO, are relevent to Dr. Budwig and her protocol/regimen
for regainingg health by re-introducing Omega 3 into our daily diets. But
the Omega 3 must be combined with the low fat dairy product Quark/Cottage
Cheese or Yoghurt, as we all know.
I, personally , choose the Flaxseed oil because I have gone for vegetarian
sources. This is not to discredit good meat/ good fish sources but to say I
agree with Dr. Budwig on these points. It`s good to know that Lorenzo and
Wilhelm are both up on "Alternative sources" [ no pun inteneded!] for Omega
3. Just get it into the body by any means and try to avoid rancid/processed
oils whether they come from plant or animal sources. The choice is for us to
decide, while we have a choice.
Keep this topic going because it is of great interest to many, and it clears
up a lot of points, silent or otherwise.
Ciao for now & Good reading and discussing. Thanks and best, Mike Cinelli

Dr. Mercola..........Ignores Dr. Budwig.

2008-10-27 22:47:34

Dr. Mercola simply ignores Dr. Budwig and Cottage Cheese.
He has written that He used to recommend Flaxseed oil--------but no more
because----it did not work alone without Cottage Cheese.
But He ignores Dr. Budwig's advice to take the FSO with Cottage Cheese.
Now Dr. Mercola may be such a big cheese these days that He can not be bothered
to investigate Dr. Budwigs writings.
Maybe if everyone wrote him about it-----It may get his attention.
It is very easy to search his writings--He has a great site.
I happen to read most of his stuff and feel he makes a real contribution on most
subjects.
But He needs to be reminded that He is not the guy that researched Flax Oil and
Cottage Cheese.

dear cynthia,
all this medical talk is completely counterproductive. all this talk about
the medical terms and diagnosis is just confusing you obviously.
the point is WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT?
have you read my book "No More Horse Estrogen!"? have you read mina dobic's
My Beautiful Life"?
are you eating good healthy, whole foods and avoiding meat, poultry, eggs,
milk and dairy products?
are you on prescription drugs which toxify the body and stop the healing?
WHAT supplements are you taking? flax oil and beta glucan are only two of at
least 20 you should be taking.
what natural hormones are you taking? do you know your hormone levels?
GO READ MY BOOK for free at www.youngagain.com. order mina dobic's book from
amazon.com. then read my book for free "zen macrobiotics for americans".
then collect a good 20 supplements.
then test and balance your melatonin, dhea, testosterone, pregnenolone,
progesterone, estriol, estrone and estradiol.
then go get a thyroid test for your T3 and T4.
after you've read all three books get back to me directly if you wish. and
stay away from the doctors and all those words you can't pronounce as it it
totally counterproductive to what you should be DOING about your situation.

Dear Harold,
Not everyone is in a position to acquire a copy of Dr. Budwig's books. I did
some searching around after discovering that the books here (Australia) cost
well above my budget. The initial book cost $ 18,95 Australian) with
cookbook somewhere in the $ 40 range(Australian). Did some surfing on net
and found Barleans the best one with both books costing $8.95 (American).
However, it cost $21.50 to ship it out to Australia making it $30.45.
Convering that to our Dollars makes it close to 60 dollars. Can't do it.
And that's why it is so great to have a forum like this with so many
knowledgable contributors. If asking questions is rattling your case too
badly, why not delete or ignore it Harold? Your response was like yelling
and even though it wasn't me asking the questions, I felt bad for the person

That's how I do it. Buy the goat's milk raw (it's packaged) from my organic

It is an hour's drive to get it there fore not very economical for me to go

Thanks for sending those articles.
They are just fantastic as an example of the futility of present day studies;
Note they always say we learned little, more study is needed.
They invariably leave out important variables.
I am prejudiced in favor of studies that attempt insofar as possible to limit
variables or to studies that filter out the important stuff.
One of the best studies I have seen is the Mediterranean diet study that
showed the Crete diet to be outstanding.
Of course I feel that red meat is the best food if it has not been ruined by
feeding grains to the animals. This is discussed on the Paleo diet list.

Ervin,
another way to look at it is that flaxseed oil is a fat and has
calories.
But when you eat fo/cc, you would eat less of other fats which would
have a compensatory effect.
For instance if you ate margarine before, that should be out.
Butter and other animal fats likewise should be out if you are
fighting a disease with this protocol.
More exercise will help also to burn calories and has other benefits
as well.
If your caloric intake exceeds what you are burning, your weight will
go up. Just keep an eye on it.

Hi Ervin,
Yours is a loaded question. If the Dr Budwig Flaxseedoil/cottage cheese
protocol is followed correctly, there should not be a weight gain, provided
you are doing the whole regimen. You must read her two books tranlated into
English for better understanding. She states that the metabolism will get
back in sync(paraphrazed) but you have to change your lifestyle if you want
to get better, and, live in a better way. Gaining weight usually comes from
a compendium of problems in the body and situations in life. By reading Dr.
Budwig, you will find some of your answers.
Are you able or willing to eliminate white flour products, sugar, fried
foods, meat products, etc? Are you willing to take the Flaxseed Oil/low fat
cottage cheese combination daily? Are you willing to do moderate exercise?
Get some sun? Reduce/eliminate stress? Get back to Nature? Get in tandem
with the Universe? Get the spiritual side of life honed and become more
spiritual? Etc.,Etc.. Can you give up junk foods which most think are good
due to the hype/ easy availablity? Can you begin to eat more raw berries,
fruits, vegetables? All of these and more go into the answer to your question.
For professional guidance, a good naturopath, like Dr. Bormann of this group
or a good nutritionist, Like Dietician Jane, also of this group, or any
practitioner of your choice may be able to help you, a bit more, if you
don`t have time to read Dr. Budwig yourself.
Thanks for posting this thougt provoking question and Good luck and good
reading, Mike Cinelli

Speaking only for myself, I am very happy to see a few alternative
methods lightly discussed. I have been out of town for a few days
and had 256 emails waiting from the group. Out of all of those, I
would say that only 4%, at the most, discuss other methods than
flax. I would have not heard of Hulda if these methods had not been

thanks for this...... but I find flaxseed oil from VitaminWorld very fresh
and light tasting and kept refrigerated, of course. I am not obese but my
son is and he is loosing weight with his version of Budwig's protocol,
unintentionally, and he's pleased. Helps his brain function a whole lot
better.......

Reply To/Dr. Mercola is Correct/PickPinkFlowers/FlaxseedOil

2008-10-22 22:27:31

Hi P.P.Flowers and all,
Well, let`s all get back to Basics....I don`t blame Dr. Mercola for not
recommending Flaxseed oil to his patients, and I hope he doesn`t recommend
other oils, at the same time!... Oils are to be treated and used very
carefully and with great preparation. It has always been my contention,
IMMHO [In My Most Humble Opinion], that it is best to stay clear of Flaxseed
oil alone. I do not use it on salads nor do I take it alone, in capsule
form, or what not. I have a brother whose Doctor told him to take the
capsules. He does 500mg daily, I don`t...
Now why in the world would anyone, brother or not, take a capsule of oil in
susbstitution for the Dr. Budwig protocol of Flaxseedoil/low
fatQuark/Cottage Cheese/Yoghurt, whereby the oil will get truly absorbed
along with the much needed sulferated/amino acids ( found in the dairy
product of choice)? This proven combination allows the Omega 3 to enter the
blood stream directly! That`s where the excellent results come
from...Without the Dairy Product combination, the oil has a lot less benefit
and could be harmful, as Dr. Budwig has repeatedly claimed/warned/advised,
and a rancid condition would make it even worse!
Oils have to be stored in a cool place and in jars or dark bottles (light
and heat destroy their goodness and cause a rancid condition to result). So
Dr. Mercola is CORRECT. No rancid Flaxseed oil alone! When and if, this well
known Doctor puts his patients on the Dr. Budwig Protocol, he will be amazed
at the improved health results they will achieve "a` la Doctor Budwig". So
no one should get their "Knickers In A Twist" over what Dr. Doctor Mercola
has said about rancid flaxseed oil. They should get upset at what he hasn`t
said! To wit, use the Dr. Budwig Protocol and combine your Flaxseed Oil with
low fat cottage cheese! That will help countless ill people, and the not so
ill, as well as, the healthy ones to maintain or regain a high level of good
health, as the case may be.
It`s back to basics again, eh? The same goes for our illustrious "Golden
Goose Scientific Researchers", government or private, who are chasing the
illusive "Pot of Gold at the end of the Rainbow", when it`s right under our
nose all the time! Oh, well, what`s a few hundred billion US dollars here
and a few hundred billion US dollars there. It`s only money...and keeps the
economy going,eh?
Seriously, I hope someone can get this message to Dr. Mercola. He is a
favorite of mine and does more good that he does harm. By recommending the
Dr. Budwig Protocol to his patients, he can do a lot more good for them and
all.
Ciao for now, good laughing and good health to all, Mike Cinelli

Dr. Mercola..........

2008-10-22 04:42:29

Dr. Mercola writes:
Ground flaxseeds are a useful addition to most people's diet. The unfortunate
problem though with using them for most people is that when one has elevated
insulin levels, the delta six desaturase enzyme is severely inhibited.
This enzyme is responsible for converting the alpha linolenic acid (ALA) in flax
to longer chain fats (like EPA and DHA) and it is easy to develop an excess of
ALA in one's system, which is counterproductive.
Who has elevated insulin levels?
Most Americans, as just about anyone who is overweight (60% of the US
population) has excess insulin, as do most all those with high cholesterol, high
blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.
So the flax should be used sparingly and probably alternated with other ground
grains, like sunflower, sesame and pumpkin, which will help to balance the omega
six and omega three ratios.
Pumpkin seeds have other fats in them which are likely to be particularly
beneficial for prostate health.
The seeds should be freshly ground in a coffee grinder and I prefer to have them
in my freshly produced vegetable juice pulp. Most people who juice throw away
the pulp, but I am convinced it is a valuable source of nutrients and should be
consumed like a porridge while drinking your fresh vegetable juice.
Drink your juice and eat your pulp.
I don't recommend the use of flaxseed oil however, particularly because of its
instability. Five years ago, I used to recommend it to nearly all my patients
and I noticed the majority of them could not tolerate it.
This is despite the fact that they were using two of the best brands of flax oil
in the country (Omega Flow and Barleans). I came to the conclusion that the
nausea they were experiencing was a giant clue from their body and subsequently
concluded that most people do not do well with flaxseed oil, which is why I no
longer recommend it.

Freezing goat milk

2008-10-22 02:17:43

Each time we make yogurt, one quart goes into ice cube trays in the freezer.
We use these frozen cubes as culture for our next batch of yogurt. They
thaw out with just the composition they went in. Freezing store-bought
cow's milk results in a granular product after thawing, but that may be a
result of the homogenization. If you really want to know, write me and I'll
freeze some goat's milk and let you know.

Hi Alobar,
Your following questions seem to indicate that you have not yet read Dr.
Budwig`s two books translated into English, let alone her works in German.
This is surprizing because I note that you are on several lists and always
seem to have some good comments or suggestions.
My suggestions to your pleas for instant "scientific facts":-),
paraphrazing, of course, follow:
1. Go to the "horse`s mouth" [ Dr. Budwig`s writings] and do your own checking.
2. Look at this very recent posting from Rick Muenzer at
"http://www.alkalizeforhealth.net/sunlight.htm"/
It should start you in the right direction on finding some answr to some of
your questions.
3. By all means keep this group informed of any "scientific studies" you may
have found are finding and will find, outside of those conducted by the
Great Lady, during countless hours of research which have given us this
"eleixir of life" and great understanding of how to eleimnate cancer, heart
infarction, arthritis, diabetis, and other life threatening diseases, etc...
No one is going to do" your homework" for you if you are seriously ill
beyond what`s here, and no one on this list is going to say that we wouldn`t
welcome "your findings."
Please don`t get me wrong and think I am attacking you, which I am not, but
your quetions seem to fall into the "Doubting Thomas "category, and "a quest
for scientific explanation", which you will find fairly difficult to locate
in North America, since Dr. Budwig and her protocol seem to be branded as
"Enemy Number One" by the Food Processors, Pharma-Cemico-Medico Cartel, and
, at this time, by some misguided/misdirected Govermental Agencies,
Universitiy Research Departments/Centers and those responsible for "our
health", since no funding or desire seems to be available for conducting
true research to investigate her findings.
In the meantime, we "ignorant unscientific peasants " will go on using her
wonderful protocol and will enjoy what time we have basking in the sunlight,
exercising, using her suggested protocol, food intake suggestions, and
staying out of Allpathic Harm`s way, whenever possible.
All this is, of course, my unfounded , unscientific MHO [Most Humble Opinion].
Thanks and best, with good humor and good health to all, Mike Cinelli

Where to find goats's milk

2008-10-21 05:40:54

In every town or city are people raising goats for 4H projects, for good
milk for the family or just for fun. You can easily find them in the summer
by attending county fairs or 4H fairs.
Now that summer is pretty much over, try calling your county extension
office. They will know of: 1) a club of folks who are interested in goats
or 2) the name of your local sale barn. Hopefully from one source or the
other you can get a few phone numbers and chase down someone who raises
goats and has excess milk to sell. We pay $3 a gallon in our area.
I would recommend visiting the goat owner when you locate one to "inspect"
where and how he handles the details of milking. Pails, jugs, etc must be
cleaned and sanitized each milking. It will be a barn or shed, so don't let
hay or manure scare you, as long as they don't touch the milk.
Goat's milk should have the yogurt culture added as soon as you bring it
home. This prevents other bacteria from taking hold. Uncultured goat's
milk will begin to smell "goaty" on the third day. That is caproic acid in
the milk, not bacteria, however it is unpleasant. Milk made into yogurt
lasts for many days without any goat odor.
Yes, it is illegal to sell unpastuerized milk for human consumption, but our
supplier doesn't
care to know what we do with the milk. Many people feed it to puppies, etc.
By the way I am not recomending you use goat's milk I'm just telling you
what we do in case you are interested.

flax. The main fatty acid in flax is alpha linolenic acid (ALA). I
have been doing large numbers of fatty acid analysis through John
Hopkins Hospital and it seems most individuals I have tested have
elevated levels of ALA. Many people do not have the necessary
pathways optimized to process this fat down the chain so it can be
fully utilized. It then backs up and can cause complications.

This page attempts to reconcile two opposite views of sunlight - sunlight
causes cancer vs. sunlight prevents cancer. Exposure of the skin to sunlight
is necessary for good health and for thousands of years "solariums" have
been an integral part of health spas. However, too much of a good thing can
become a bad thing. Ionizing radiation creates free radicals that damage
cells and are associated with cancer. Diet and lifestyle factors can remove
the free radicals and accelerate the repair of any damage they have caused.
Dr. Johanna Budwig suggests that through dietary changes everyone, including
cancer patients, can increase their tolerance for sunlight thereby becoming
able to enjoy more of the health benefits that sunlight can provide.
"That the sun, as the element of life, also affects the dynamics of the
vital functions is apparently self-evident. Everyone seems to agree. But
then why are there so many people who say: I can't tolerate the sun? The
answer is on its way. Firstly, a few words on the topic of: The dynamics of
the vital functions and their base in the sun's energy: When I have treated
patients and they then lie in the sun, these sick people notice that they
begin to feel very much better; rejuvenated. In contrast to this you often
hear about people on sunny beaches having heart failure. It is not unusual
for heart infarction to occur. Both conditions are observable. For some
people nowadays, the sun's energy is an overly strenuous matter, while for
others the dynamics of the sun's energy have an invigorating effect on all
the vital functions. The stimulating effect of the sun on the secretions of
the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, bladder and salivary glands is easily
felt. These organs only dry out under the sun's rays when the substances
which stimulate secretion in the body are lacking. With all these
observations it is of decided importance, whether the surface-active
electron-rich highly unsaturated fats are present as a resonance system for
the sun's energy, or whether they are not. Doctors tell cancer patients that
they should avoid the sun; that they can't tolerate it. That is correct. The
moment, however, that these patients cancer patients as well have been
following my oil-protein nutritional advice for two or three days, which
means that they have been getting sufficient amounts of the essential fats,
they can then tolerate the sun very well. Indeed they emphasize how fine
they suddenly feel in the sun how much their vitality and vigor is stirred
and stimulated." - Budwig, Dr. Johanna, Flax Oil as a True Aid Against
Arthritis, Heart Infarction, Cancer and Other Diseases, Apple Publishing
Company Ltd., Vancouver, 1994, pages 53-54.
As explained on our Cancer Self Treatment page, Dr. Johanna Budwig treats
cancer patients with a mixture of 3-6 Tbsps. flaxseed oil and 4 oz. (1/2
cup) low-fat cottage cheese daily. The mixture is most effective if the
flaxseed oil and low-fat cottage are thoroughly mixed or blended.

Cooking by Dr. Johanna Budwig, Apple Publishing Co, 1996.
Five targeted nutrients can improve the quality and appearance of your skin
while delaying the aging process for your entire body. These five nutrients
are coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, alpha lipoic acid, vitamin E, and vitamin C.
- Dr. Stephen Sinatra
(Vitamin C is needed for the synthesis of carnitine, which is required for
long-chain fatty acids to enter mitochondria where they are used for energy
production. Click here for more information on vitamin C and cancer.)
From Dr. David Williams Alternatives newsletter, March 2002:
New research from Monash University, in Victoria, Australia, has shown that
what you eat can directly influence the health of your skin. Skin damage in
individuals living in Melbourne, Australia was compared to that of
individuals living in rural Greece and in Sweden. It was discovered that the
type of foods they consumed influenced the amount of wrinkling and damage to
sun-exposed skin in older individuals from different ethnic backgrounds.
Far less skin damage and wrinkling was found in those individuals who had a
higher intake of the following foods: vegetables, olive oil, fish, legumes,
eggs, yoghurt, nuts, olives, cherries, melons, dried fruits/prunes,
apples/pears, multigrain bread, jam, tea, and water.
Foods that were associated with more wrinkling and skin damage included:
full-fat milk, red meat, potatoes, margarine, butter, soft drinks/cordials,
cakes, pastries, and sugar products. - (J Am Coll Nutr 01:20(1):71-80)
...If you go to the trouble of cleaning up your diet by reducing saturated
fats and the other items listed above, don't replace them with more refined
carbohydrates or sugar. Instead, add more fruits and vegetables - and
include foods rich in the monounsaturated fats that we now know reduce the
risk of cancer and heart disease, reduce inflammation, and, as the above
study indicates, prevent skin wrinkling and slow the aging process. Olive
oil, olives, avocados, and walnuts are all great sources of monounsaturated
oils.

From Dr. David Williams Alternatives newsletter, April 2002:
Sunlight exposure is a necessary requirement for vitamin D production in the
body, and is also necessary for proper mood health. However, with the fear
of skin cancer and wrinkling, tanning or even getting sun exposure has
become taboo. The result is that depression is becoming more and more
commonplace.
The problem is that, even under normal circumstances, it would be difficult
for many people to get enough sun exposure to avoid depression in most of
the Northern and Northeastern U.S. cities. Only during a few summer months
are there enough UV-B rays reaching those areas to allow for proper vitamin
D production. (The three main forms of UV, or ultraviolet, radiation from
the sun are UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-B rays are the ones we need to produce
vitamin D naturally, but they are also the ones that can produce sunburn and
tanning.)
Even when UV-B rays are adequate, most people now either slather on the
sunscreen or avoid the sun altogether. Any sunscreen with a protective
factor of 8 or more will block almost all of the UV-B rays from reaching the
skin.
The ironic thing about all of this is that the incidence of skin cancer has
more to do with consuming wrong fats (too many omega-6 fatty acids and not
enough omega-3s - see Vol.8, No. 8) than it does with exposure to the sun.
Until the general public understands this fact, skin cancer problems will
continue to increase - which will in turn cause even more fear of sunlight
exposure and more depression. This whole situation has gotten way out of
control. Because of the fats we're now eating and our fear of sunlight, it's
becoming necessary to supplement our diets with vitamin D. But in the
natural scheme of things, our bodies can manufacture enough vitamin D when
given regular exposure to sunlight.
Dr. Shelton offers the following insights:
The great sanitarium of Hippocrates, on the Island of Cos, was equipped with
a large solarium for the use of the sun.
Ultraviolet rays of the sun are capable of ionizing sodium, calcium, and
perhaps hydrogen, magnesium, silicon and iron.
Sunshine feeds the muscles. Today every athlete employs sunshine as a
regular part of his or her training. Muscles subjected to proper sun
exposure grow larger, firmer, and have their contractile powers enhanced.
In the absence of sunlight, even with the best food, animals are not healthy.
Cancer is less prevalent in the sunny regions of the earth.
The germicidal power of sunlight is well known. It is the greatest of all
disinfectants and antiseptics.
Sunshine aids in preserving the normal alkalinity of the blood and should
prove an effective aid in restoring normal alkalinity.
Sunshine is essential to the production of good milk.
Sunlight aids in skeletal development of babies before birth and aids in the
production of milk after birth.
Oxygen consumption of living cells is vastly greater in light than in darkness.
Light increases chlorophyll in plants and hemoglobin in animals.
If a child receives an abundance of sunlight it will thrive on almost any
kind of diet, whereas, if you deprive it of sunlight, it will not thrive
well on the best of diets.
Sunshine aids in building good teeth. Breathing becomes deeper and slower,
sleep sounder, blood pressure is diminished. There is not a tissue or
function in the body that is not favorably affected, either directly or
indirectly by sunshine.
Ordinary glass does not permit the ultra-violet rays to pass through.
Basking in the warmth and light of the sun that passes through the window
pane is of small value in the prevention of "disease" or the restoration of
health. The unfiltered rays of the sun alone are capable of assisting the
work of metabolism.
Corpulent, anemic individuals have their weight decreased by sun-bathing,
due to acceleration of the oxidation of fat.
Prolonged exposure of the unprotected skin to the sun's rays results in
severe and painful burning, prostration and even death.
Tanning is due to a deposit of pigment (melanin granules) around the nuclei
of the epidermal and basal cells, following exposure to the rays of the sun.
Pigment is the most important protecting mechanism by which the body
prevents getting an overdose of sunshine.
As more pigment develops in the skin, more sunshine can be enjoyed without
harm.
The brown melanin pigment absorbs the visible and ultra-violet radiations,
and also serves to protect against heat.
In general, pigmented skin is more resistant to infections and other problems.
A good coat of tan increases resistance to both heat and cold.
Pigmented nipples are less likely to become sore during nursing.
Sunshine is the finest cosmetic. Skin, well-pigmented in response to
sunbathing, tends to become firm and strong, but at the same time delicate
and soft, almost silk-like in texture.
Tanning is part of an overall program to create health, but is not a
substitute for right living in other departments of life.
Good pigmentation depends on regular sunbathing.
If lotions and oils provided the "protection" that they are claimed to
provide, they would also prevent tanning and would at the same time deprive
the bather of the benefits of sunbathing.
In a broad general sense all of these lotions are frauds, none of them are
ever necessary, and many of them are actually harmful.
A uniform tan is achieved by exposing the body uniformly to the sun.
Too much exposure to the sun occasions an excessive thickening of the
corneum and, at the same time, makes the skin dry and causes it to scale. A
harsh, dry, coarse skin is the result. Certainly this is not desirable and
it is the worst kind of folly to stay in the sun long enough that this takes
place. The intelligent person will avoid undue exposure and thus avoid the
undesirable consequences.
A silken, smooth skin is the result of proper sunbathing. The ancient rule
of moderation should guide us here. Even animals, birds and insects avoid
over exposure.
Sunburn is a real burn and injures the skin just as much as fire or scalding
water.
Sunburn does not show up immediately. One burns without realizing it until
hours later. The only safety lies in not overdoing the sunbathing until a
protective coat of tan has been built up.
To avoid burning it is only necessary to avoid excessive exposure of the
body or any part of it to the sun until a good protective coat of tan has
been acquired.
A thin haze over the sun does not exclude its ultra-violet rays and will not
prevent burning. A cool breeze will not prevent burning. It is not the sun's
heat rays that produce sunburn. Do not be misled by the fact that it is
cloudy or partially cloudy.
Plants and animals grown under artificial light are not equal to plants and
animals irradiated by the sun. The lamp cannot produce all the effects of
sunlight.
The complete solar spectrum, with all its colors and shades so blended and
proportioned as to produce white light, is needed for ideal growth and
development.
In medical circles sunbathing is blamed for skin cancer. The evidence for
this is very weak. Repeated burning and habitual over-exposure may help to
develop cancer, but what has this to do with intelligent sunbathing?
There are those who tan readily and those who tan slowly and with
difficulty. There are a few who do not tan at all. The amount of precaution
required depends on the type of skin possessed.
Start with six to ten minutes. Expose the front for three to five minutes
and then the back for three to five minutes.
Increase the time of exposure by one minute for each side each day until 30
minutes per side is reached.
Those who do not want a dark tan on their faces, necks and arms may cover
these when taking sunbaths.
Closing the eyes is all the protection they need.
Constant movement in the sun is best. Rest in the shade.
Animals seek the sunlight but avoid its heat. They prefer to be in the sun
during the cool portions of the day and seek the shade when it grows hot.
The late afternoon is also a good time for sunbathing.
If sunbathing indoors, the sun should come in through an open window or door.
One cannot take a sunbath without also taking an air bath, but the air bath
can also be done in darkness. It consists simply in exposing the nude body
to the air.
An air bath of twenty minutes duration reduces the hydrogen-ion content of
the blood to normal.
Air baths will harden one and make one more resistant to weather changes. It
is a good thing to train oneself to resist an exaggerated dread of cold.
Thousands of people enjoy their daily air bath, even in the most inclement
weather.

Many nutrients promote the healing of burns, suggesting that a diet rich in
these nutrients may be helpful in PREVENTING burns. This would create
exactly the situation that Dr. Budwig suggests - a greater tolerance for
sunlight.
Nutrient Effect on healing and preventing burns.
anti-oxidants Ionizing radiation creates free radicals. Anti-oxidants such
as MAK, selenium, coenzyme Q10, vitamins C and E help protect the body from
free radical damage.
calcium Needed for protein structuring.
magnesium Magnesium is lost from burns
potassium Potassium is lost from burns.
vitamin A Needed for tissue repair.
vitamin B3 B vitamins help the body deal with stress. Vitamin B3 promotes
blood circulation to accelerate healing.
vitamin C Promotes healing, protects the body from infections, helps remove
toxic chemicals from the body. Vitamin C can be mixed into a lotion and
applied directly to the skin .
vitamin D Needed for calcium absorption.
vitamin E Promotes healing and prevents scarring.
protein Needed for tissue building.
zinc Promotes quicker healing.
selenium Promotes tissue elasticity, is an antioxidant.
Many of these nutrients we have discussed previously in our 8 step program
to prevent and remove cancer. Compare the above table with the following
table which discusses the impact of each or our 8 steps and their impact on
prevention and healing of burns
8 Step Cancer Program Impact on Burns
1. More oxygen Burns are devoid of oxygen. Bandages can be soaked with 3%
hydrogen peroxide and applied directly to the skin. Alternatively, you can
add a cup or pint of 3% hydrogen peroxide to a bath tub of water.
2. More alkalinity Alkaline minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium) help
prevent and heal burns.
3. Less free radicals Burns create free radicals. Antioxidants such as MAK,
Microwater, Microhydrin and various nutrients help to neutralize free
radicals.
4. More exercise Improved circulation of the lymph resulting in nourishment
and purification of the body tissues.
5. Hyperthermia Promotes circulation, helps to remove toxic chemicals from
the body, thereby reducing free radicals. Hyperthermia is an effective
treatment for skin cancer, because the skin is so easily heated (cancer
cells are destroyed by heat) and toxins can so readily escape through the
skin.
6. More enzymes Enzymes facilitate all metabolic activities, including
healing of burns.
7. Nutrient-dense diet, B17, F, & C Many nutrients are needed for the
healing of tissues. Vitamin F promotes increased oxygen to all parts of the
body, and according to Dr. Johanna Budwig, is essential for the body to
tolerate sunlight, saying it provides "a resonance system for the sun's
energy". Vitamin C significantly reduces radiation damage to skin.
8. Transcendental Meditation Release of stress resulting in calmness of
mind, body and emotions. Having a technique to calm the mind and emotions is
very useful in stressful medical situations. Many problems are very easy to
prevent compared to fix, and the increased clarity of mind that comes with
regular meditation can help prevent the "danger that has not yet come".
Our conclusion is that people following the 8 step program to prevent cancer
as part of their healthy lifestyle should have significantly greater
tolerance for sunlight, and may heal from sunburn more quickly. Moderate
exposure to the sun will help increase the alkalinity of the body and
improve one's resistance to cancer.
Skin Cancer is Big Business
In the USA, Medicare reimbursement for the removal of keratoses and other
benign or precancerous lesions amounted to roughly $211,000,000 in 1995.
Skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma) and carcinoma of the uterine cervix are
generally so readily curable through surgery and radiation that they are not
included in the official cancer statistics. - Moss page 8

"In 1995, Gar Hildenbrand, an advisor to the Office of Technology Assessment
(OTA) in its attempt to assess the status of unconventional cancer therapies
in the United States, coauthored a thorough retrospective analysis of
five-year survival rates of melanoma patients treated with the Gerson
Therapy, The results were extremely impressive. Some 82 percent of Gerson
patents with Stage IIIA melanoma were alive five years after commencing
treatment, compared to 39 percent with conventional treatment. For Stage IVA
melanoma, the results were even more exceptional: 39 percent were alive at
five years, compared to 6 percent." - Robbins page 281.
Insulin Potentiation Therapy
"Is it possible that a man with metastatic melanoma, one of the worst
cancers you can develop, can be brought virtually to remission without any
apparent toxicity? Believe it or not, this is just one of several cases of
"terminal" cancer that was dramatically reversed and presented at the
Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT) training workshop sponsored by the
International Oxidative Medicine Association in April.
Chicago's Dr. Ross Hauser presented other equally dramatic cases of several
other cancers. IPT is a treatment utilizing exceptionally small amounts of
chemotherapy for cancer. The toxic effects of the drugs are magnified many
fold on the cancer cells by the hormone insulin, while the low dosage spares
normal cells, The horrific side effects simply do not occur. Most IPT
physicians are experiencing satisfying results. Simply extending life
comfortably and with little, if any, toxicity beats the best of what
conventional treatment has to offer.

Potentiation Therapy...IPT physicians can be found at www.iptq.org." - Dr.
Robert Jay Rowen's Second Opinion, June 2002.

"Cancer cells need glucose to burn for energy. They are almost totally
dependent upon glucose as their energy source, while other cells can also
burn fats. With few exceptions, all cells require insulin to allow glucose
to enter. Since cancer cells are totally dependent on glucose as their only
energy source, they have many more insulin receptors on their membranes
(this is how the cancer cell consumes the glucose). In fact, they may have
anywhere from six to 15 times the number of insulin receptors as normal
cells, giving them a real competitive advantage in swallowing up fuel.
But insulin has other effects as well. In addition to insulin opening up the
path for glucose to enter, it also makes the cell membrane more permeable to
other substances, including chemotherapy drugs. Thus, because insulin
receptors are so concentrated on cancer cells, increasing the insulin in the
cancer patient's body opens the cancer up. When this happens, the cancer can
be selectively targeted by the cancer drugs without affecting the normal
cells. More drugs will enter the cancer cells in the presence of insulin. In
fact, a study in the early 1980's showed that the chemotherapy drug
methotrexate had its ability to kill breast cancer cells magnified 10,000
times when the cells were prepared with insulin!
...This means a far smaller quantity of chemotherapy drugs are needed to
achieve effectiveness. Hence - little, if any, toxicity!" - Dr. Robert Jay
Rowen's Second Opinion, September 2001.

vitamin D may be the most likely cause." - Cancer Causes & Control 9: 6 (DEC

"Low cancer areas were far more frequent in the sun belt. What was the
significance of sunlight with regard to cancer rates? Sunlight reacts with
cholesterol inside and on the surface of the skin to create vitamin-D.
Vitamin-D helps the body absorb calcium and plays a major role in the bodys
ability to use the calcium that is available," The Calcium Connection, Dr.
Cedric Garland and Dr. Frank Garland, 1989, Forside, Simon and Shuster Inc.
Vitamin D deficiency is common in winter, particularly in northern climates.
Sunshine is good for you. Get some sunshine on your face and body even for
five to ten minutes every day. The sunlight has beneficial results not only
on the skin, but through the eyes, the layers of brain tissues that secrete
"hormones of happiness". - Dr. Keki Sidhwa
Dr. Ott also demonstrated the deleterious effects of various colors of light
on health. His work with microscopic time-lapse photography revealed that
heart cells of chicks, when subjected to red light, weakened and ultimately
ruptured. "This again raises the question," he said, "of whether there may
be any connection between coronary disorders and the high red content within
the spectrum of ordinary incandescent light bulbs." The implications here of
the possible effect of ordinary incandescent light on the cardiovascular
system are enormous, but no one, as far as we know, has followed up Ott's
work in this field...Skin cancer is more common among office workers than it
is among those who work in the sunlight...Ultraviolet deprivation may have
caused the dramatic increase in cancer...There may very well be a
relationship between abnormal fluorescent light, i.e., light that is not
full-spectrum, and the onset of leukemia...Dr. Ott relates his experience
with six women who were able to conceive after he advised them to throw away
their tinted glasses. Estrogen, one of the female hormones essential for
conception, has a sharp peak in absorption of ultraviolet light at 290
nanometers, This frequency of light is usually filtered out by
sunglasses...The same principle may well hold true for the male hormone... -

Editor's Note: Given the amount of time the average person spends indoors,
it is very important to use full spectrum lighting. Every workplace, school
and home needs this lighting. In our opinion, the best quality full-spectrum
lighting comes from Dr. Ott's company called OTT Biolight. Their website is

Just recently, scientists have discovered that the yellow/orange pigment
bilirubin, found in bile, could possibly be involved in the transfer of
light energy from the sun to our cells.
In previous articles, I've explained how light energy particles called
photons are actually absorbed by various essential fatty acids in our skin
and bloodstream. This is one of the methods our bodies use to store "energy"
from light. It's also one of the reasons I've been so adamant about
supplementing your diet with the EFA's contained in foods such as flax seed
and fish. As part of those recommendations, I have also stressed the need
for proper fat digestion. Even if you supplement your diet with adequate
amounts of essential fatty acids, if you can't digest these healthy fats,
you're still going to have problems.
One of the key components in fat digestion is bile, which is made in the
liver. It is stored and released into the intestine by the gallbladder.
Although most physicians place very little importance on the gallbladder, it
plays a key role in proper fat digestion and your overall health. The proper
timing and release of the bile and bilirubin it contains may be even more
important than we thought, for several reasons.
1) Bilirubin now appears to be one of the body's phototransducers. A
phototransducer has the ability to absorb light energy from photons and
transfer this energy to cells throughout the body...
2) Levels of bilirubin fluctuate with our circadian rhythm...
3) Bilirubin is one of the few compounds that can easily move through cell
walls and into the nucleus of cells...
4) Bilirubin can easily cross the blood/brain barrier.
5) Bilirubin has been demonstrated to have strong antioxidant capabilities.

Fat in goats's milk

2008-10-19 20:05:57

We mix our gallon of goat's milk with yogurt at noon two days a week. It
sits in a cooler in 5 quart jars in 105 degree water till 10 pm, then goes
into our fridge.
By morning a 1 inch layer of whey has risen to the top of each jar and
riding on top of that is a thin layer of cream. It is very easy to pour off
the cream and the whey before using the delicious yogurt. Our great
Pyrenees dog waits every morning at the patio door for his cream and whey
treat.
Hope this helps

Questions I have been meaning to ask

2008-10-19 01:18:39

I have been reading this group for a while now (1803 messages
over the past 2 months), and I have some questions. Please do not
feel I am putting down the Budwig protocol. But I am just unclear
how much of it is based on real research & how much of it is an
almost religious following of every un-proved & un-tested conjecture
of Dr, Budwig.
Why does the flaxseed oil have to be blended together with
the quark or cottage cheese? Why is not eating both in the same
meal sufficient?
What is the chemistry (or at least a conjecture as to the
chemistry) behind why the sulphurated proteins are needed at all?
Why low fat cottage cheese. How does fat interfere?
Based upon similar kinds of questions, I have asked about
totally different health related dietary adjuncts on other lists, I
am guessing that some will say -- the Budwig protocol works.
Messing with it may produce results which are not as good, so just
follow the protocol.
While such thinking has merit in the short run, we never find
out what parts of the protocol are actually necessary, and what parts
can be dropped completely. And further, by simply following
Budwig's protocol without understanding why, we can never figure out
how to make it even more efficacious.
Can anyone give me some of the theories behind why the
various aspects of the Budwig protocol are all necerssary & why?
URLs to websites giving explanations would be ideal.

Mercola on Flax Oil

2008-10-18 20:50:42

The other consideration, though, is the metabolism of the fat in flax. The main
fatty acid in flax is alpha linolenic acid (ALA). I have been doing large
numbers of fatty acid analysis through John Hopkins Hospital and it seems most
individuals I have tested have elevated levels of ALA. Many people do not have
the necessary pathways optimized to process this fat down the chain so it can be
fully utilized. It then backs up and can cause complications.

"Hi All,
Here are two articles on advanced Prostate Cancer, found/listed by PM (Peter
Marino), from another newsgroup. I have included his message and those by
the prominent researchers, one from Harvard and one from the University of
California. It is interesting to note that although Omega 3 (fish oil) is
mentioned and refraining from saturated animal fats is advocated, Dr. Budwig
and her protocol are no where mentioned.(" What else is new?")
In any case, the NCI [The National Cancer Institute] is beginning to get
closer, I think! [Their attempts remind me of the game "Pin the Tail on the
Donkey"]....
Also, I caution you to beware of Dr. Mark Messina `s message. He is not an
unbiased researcher but rather a spokesman for the Soy Industry. You all
know my aversion to soy, right or wrong, but I feel that all research should
be unbiased ( which it`s not), [ Often it`s who pays the piper calls the
tune], and that all sides to a problem should be exposed (which is seldom
the case).
In any case, some attempts are better than no attempts....What are your
views? Ciao for now, Good health, good reading and good luck! Mike Cinelli

Article One:
July/August 2001 - U.S. Edition
"There's a general consensus that saturated fat or red meat is associated
with a higher risk of prostate cancer," says June Chan of the University of
California at San Francisco. But so far, studies haven't been able to tease
out what it is in meats or dairy foods that may cause prostate cells to go
haywire. Saturated or animal fat is a leading possibility. Among the others:
Red meat. In 1993, Harvard researchers reported that men who ate red meat
(beef, pork, lamb, or veal) most frequently had more than double the risk of
advanced prostate cancer compared to men who ate those meats least often.1
This year, they updated their findings on the study, which tracks more than
50,000 men.
"Our study still suggests that the less red meat you eat, the better,"
says Harvard's Edward Giovannucci.
Why red meat? Cooking the meat at high temperatures produces
heterocyclic amines, which may promote cancer. "It could also be the animal
fat or the high calorie-density of diets rich in red meat," says
Giovannucci. "We're not sure which."
If animal fat were a culprit, as some studies suggest, high-fat dairy
foods like whole milk and cheese would also put the prostate at risk. But it
's also possible that the calcium in dairy foods poses a threat.
Calcium. It cuts the risk of osteoporosis and possibly colon cancer. And
low-fat milk and other dairy foods can help prevent high blood pressure
(though not necessarily because of their calcium).
So how could too much calcium promote prostate cancer? The theory: The
active form of vitamin D-which we get mostly from sunlight-may protect the
prostate.2 And calcium lowers levels of active vitamin D in the blood.
Don't panic. Not all studies see a link between calcium and prostate
cancer. And most men never reach the "too-much-calcium" range.
"Calcium may really be only a concern for men who get more than 2,000
milligrams a day," says Chan. So it's still safe to shoot for the latest
Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs)-1,000 mg a day for men 50 or younger
and 1,200 mg for men over 50. (That includes what you get from food and
supplements.)
The evidence isn't strong enough to recommend that men change their
calcium intake, she adds. "But they should be aware of the association
between calcium and prostate cancer, because they may be getting calcium
from fortified foods and not even know it."
Would it help to simply boost your vitamin D intake?
"Whether vitamin D is related to prostate cancer is still an open
question," says Giovannucci. "But it's prudent to get adequate vitamin D
from a multi-vitamin or sunlight." Fatty fish and fortified foods are also
sources.

=============================================
Article Two:
This summer, the National Cancer Institute is launching a new 7- to 12-year
trial called SELECT (Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial) to test
whether selenium (200 micrograms a day) and/or vitamin E (400 IU of
alpha-tocopherol a day) can lower the risk of prostate cancer in healthy
men. To volunteer, you must have a PSA no higher than 4 and must be at least
55 years old (at least 50 if you're African American). For more information,
call the NCI's Cancer Information Service (1-800-4CANCER).
Millions of men who have prostate cancer want to know whether diet or
supplements can slow or stop the disease. But so far, research has yielded
few answers.
For example, in a Canadian study of 384 men with prostate cancer, those
who consumed the most saturated fat were three times more likely to die of
the disease over the next five years than those who consumed the least.1 But
it isn't clear from this less-than-perfect study that saturated fat made the
difference.
Researchers are more confident that a mixture of seven herbs called
PC-SPES may slow advanced cancer in men who have no other treatments
available. But the pricey supplement may be no more safe or effective than
taking an ordinary estrogen pill.
"Many of the herbs that my prostate cancer patients take do nothing,"
says William Oh, a researcher and oncologist at Harvard Medical School and
the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. "PC-SPES has effects that are
visible to all doctors who work with it, but whether it is any more
effective than giving estrogen, we don't know."
Oh tracked 23 advanced cancer patients who had been taking six capsules
(1,920 milligrams) of PC-SPES a day.2 "Half had more than a 50 percent drop
in PSA levels and many had a decrease in symptoms and relief from bone
pain," he reports. "If we can reduce PSA levels significantly, we can
predict that they'll live longer and better."
But his study and two others like it aren't definitive, in part because
they didn't compare PC-SPES to anything else. A new clinical trial will. Oh
and colleagues will study men whose cancer is progressing even though they'
re taking drugs that block testosterone. Half will get PC-SPES; the others
will get an estrogen called DES, or diethylstilbestrol.
"We know PC-SPES has hormonal effects like estrogen," says Oh. "We're
trying to understand to what extent PC-SPES's effect is due to its estrogen
activity."
That's why taking PC-SPES is not a good strategy for men who want to
prevent prostate cancer. Like estrogen, PC-SPES can cut testosterone to
castration levels. "It's like getting your testicles removed," explains Oh.
"Eunuchs don't get prostate cancer, but it's not a price most men are
willing to pay."
What's more, PC-SPES isn't as safe as its over-the-counter availability
implies. "It has all the side effects of taking estrogen, like nipple
tenderness, breast swelling, hot flashes, and fatigue," cautions Oh. "And
the most dangerous side effect is blood clots, which occur in an estimated
five to ten percent of patients.
"Clots can stay in the legs or they can break off and go to the lung,
which is more serious," he explains. "In men who have underlying heart
disease, the clot can get lodged in a coronary artery," causing a heart
attack.
Those risks may be worth taking for men who have failed the usual
anti-testosterone treatment. In fact, Oh now recommends it to all men in
that condition. "Their life expectancy is about 12 months," he says. But a
risky supplement that can cost more than $300 a month is not a good gamble
for anyone else.
Says Oh: "Right now we have no evidence that PC-SPES prolongs life, but
it can reduce the symptoms of cancer and control the disease for some period
of time in men who have limited options."
1: European Urology 35: 388, 1999.
2: Urology 57: 122, 2001.
While it's too early to say for sure, these steps may reduce the risk of
prostate cancer:
Limit red meat, full-fat cheese, and other fatty animal foods.
Eat seafood-especially fatty fish like salmon-three or four times a week.
Eat healthy tomato-rich dishes (spaghetti or other pastas, not lasagna or
pizza) at least twice a week.
Consider taking a daily supplement with 200 micrograms (mcg) of
selenomethionine or high-selenium yeast. (If you're looking for SelenoExcell
high-selenium yeast, check the ingredient list. It's found in some selenium
and multivitamin-and-mineral supplements.)
Get some gamma-tocopherol in your diet. Soy oil (often used in salad
dressings), corn oil, and sesame oil are good sources. (Some vitamin E
supplements contain both alpha- and gamma-tocopherol, but many labels don't
say how much gamma you're getting.)
Limit calcium intake from food and pills to 1,200 mg a day and take a
standard multivitamin with 400 IU of vitamin D.
Now, for the first time, the evidence is strong enough that the National
Cancer Institute (NCI) is set to launch a ten-year trial on 32,000 men to
see if two supplements-selenium and vitamin E-can cut the incidence of
prostate cancer.
"If this study shows a reduction in cancer rates anywhere near what we'
ve seen in earlier trials, it would put a dent in the 200,000 new cases of
prostate cancer we see annually," says NCI researcher Demetrius Albanes. But
some experts worry that the trial is testing the wrong kind of selenium and
vitamin E. "We have to keep our fingers crossed and hope for positive
results," says Tim Byers, a professor of preventive medicine at the
University of Colorado in Denver. "We could use some."
The death count alone-31,500 lives lost every year-doesn't begin to
measure the anxiety, misery, and pain caused by prostate cancer. Yet after
years of research, experts don't have many answers for men who want to dodge
the disease through diet.
"When you put all the data together, it looks like diet is definitely
important," says Edward Giovannucci of the Harvard School of Public Health.
"But we can't make any firm recommendations yet."
That's little comfort to men who've seen friends or family members die
of the disease or who have a high risk themselves. "So far, we have nothing
definite to help men who have a PSA of 8 and have to get a biopsy every six
months," says Peter Gann of the Northwestern University Medical School in
Chicago. (Doctors use blood levels of PSA, or prostate specific antigen, to
screen men for early prostate cancer.)
Nor do researchers have anything definite to help men who face
impotence, incontinence, or other side effects from the treatment of
prostate cancer. And then there are the men who have succumbed to the
disease. Larry Clark was the University of Arizona researcher whose 1996
study found such a remarkable drop in prostate cancer rates that it led the
National Cancer Institute (NCI) to mount its new selenium trial. In March
2000, Clark died-of prostate cancer-at the age of 51.
Here's what scientists know so far about diet and the cancer that
strikes more American men than any other.
In the 1980s, when Larry Clark and colleagues assigned 1,300 people to take
either 200 micrograms of selenium or a placebo every day, no one suspected
that selenium might prevent prostate cancer. Their goal was to see whether
it could prevent skin cancer in residents of the Southeast, where the
soil-and people's diets-are selenium-poor.1
"Selenium supplements had no effect on the recurrence of skin cancer,"
Clark told Nutrition Action Healthletter in 1996. "But the three leading
cancers-lung, prostate, and colon-all decreased."
Decreased by an unheard-of two-thirds, that is. The researchers had to
stop the study three years early because the selenium-takers fared so much
better that it would have been unethical to keep people on the placebo.
Still, Clark was cautious about his findings. "Selenium is not going to
help everybody, and it's not going to cure all cancer," he explained.
It's possible that selenium only works in people who get too little from
their food...or that Clark's results were a fluke.
But worth another trial? You bet.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) doesn't expect results from its new
trial, called SELECT, for about a decade (see "SELECT One Option,").
Meanwhile, some researchers are worried that SELECT may not be using the
right kind of selenium supplement.
Clark's trial used a high-selenium yeast. (SelenoExcell is the brand
that is closest to the supplement Clark used-see "The Bottom Line,".) SELECT
will use selenomethionine, which is the most abundant form of selenium found
in the yeast. An expert panel recommended selenomethionine instead of yeast
because selenium and other constituents of the yeast vary too much from
batch to batch, explains the NCI's Demetrius Albanes.
Let's hope it was the right choice.
"I'm concerned that there might be some bioactive compounds in the yeast
that aren't in the selenomethionine supplements," says Byers, who served on
a safety committee for the 1996 study. "If the new study fails, we won't
know why."
Like selenium, vitamin E's link with the prostate showed up in a clinical
trial designed to test something else.
The Alpha-Tocopherol Beta-Carotene (ATBC) study tested a daily dose of
50 International Units (IU) of vitamin E (that's the alpha-tocopherol) on
29,000 male Finnish smokers.2 It had no impact...on lung cancer, that is.
"In the men who took alpha-tocopherol, we saw a one-third reduction in
the incidence of, and a 41 percent reduction in the death rate from,
prostate cancer over a period of five to eight years," explains Albanes, one
of the ATBC study investigators.
"That's impressive," he adds. "And it wasn't confounded by any other
factors because the men were randomly assigned to a supplement or placebo as
they walked in the door."
Other studies suggest that vitamin E might protect the prostate, but the
ATBC, says Albanes, "is the linchpin for testing it in the upcoming SELECT
trial." The NCI has stopped short of advising men to take alpha-tocopherol
supplements until the results are confirmed, he adds.
And that's just as well, because last December a report added a new
wrinkle to the vitamin E story.
Researchers at The Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health
found that men with high blood levels of gamma-tocopherol (another form of
vitamin E) had only a quarter the risk of prostate cancer over the next
eight years compared to men with lower levels.3 Alpha-tocopherol was also
linked to a lower risk, but only in men who also had high blood levels of
gamma-tocopherol.
"The role of gamma-tocopherol is new and it comes from out of the blue,"
says Giovannucci. And it could simply be a fluke. Two larger studies found
no link between gamma-tocopherol and prostate cancer.4
But the Johns Hopkins study needs to be followed up, he adds, "because
it raises the issue that vitamin E supplements, which are mainly
alpha-tocopherol, may not do as much good as some people think, and may even
do harm."
The possible harm: "High doses of alpha-tocopherol may suppress the
absorption of gamma-tocopherol," explains Giovannucci. In three studies,
alpha-tocopherol was linked to a lower risk of prostate cancer, but only in
smokers.4
"There was a suggestion of a slightly elevated risk for non-smokers who
took at least 100 IU a day, but we have no explanation for it." says June
Chan of the University of California at San Francisco.
That means the possible increased risk could be due to chance, but it's
too early to say. Says Giovannucci: "For non-smokers, there's very little
evidence of benefit and some evidence that alpha-tocopherol is deleterious."
Spaghetti sauce and pizza were big news in 1995. That's when Giovannucci's
team found that men who consumed tomato sauce two to four times a week had a
34 percent lower risk of prostate cancer than men who ate no tomato sauce.5
The possible protector: lycopene, a carotenoid found in tomatoes that's
easier to absorb if they're cooked.6
"Lycopene scavenges free radicals and suppresses damage due to oxidation
in the tissues," explains Northwestern University's Peter Gann. "As an
antioxidant, it
